>> welcome. semi colon club, tell me your story, you are a two-time survivor of colon cancer, remarkable. >> the story goes goes back when i was younger, i was growing up through my teens, i had in napster bowel disease, kept on top of for a lot of years, inflammatory bowel disease, kept on top of it for years, and not it cured its self. then 9 years ago, diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer, had surgery. and that's kind of how i came out with the semicolon club. so because it had gotten to the point where it entered into

lymph nodes, i had a recurrence, it will be almost six years ago. stage 4, and the statistics for stage 4 really is that two and a half out of ten people survive, so i'm fortunate to be here. >> this is very preventable. tell me what people can do. are there symptoms? >> there's a couple things i talk to people b first and for most, know yourself and be your own advocate. if you see something going on that's different in your habits, you're sitting around the kitchen table, you're 23409 going to talk about it, do something. see a doctor, get yourself checked, see if that's something going on. communicate with your family. find out your family history. in the old, old days, lot of times families didn't pass on to generations things going on. and -- >> something they don't want to discuss? >> they don't want to discuss, but if you find out you are a

family history, you have a higher risk, colon cancer is a hereditary thing, and third i think is important, is like i said, as you reach a certain age, 50 is kind of benchmark they talk about, get your checkup colonist pope, there are a lot of things that lead to cancer, like heavy drinking of alcohol, now smoking cigarettes can lead to colon cancer. obesity, not watching your weight, exercise, things like that. >> lot of common sense things, taking good care of yourself, knowing your body. if something is wrong, doing something about it and the most important way to prevent colon cancer, regular screening, i talk to people that have the colon cancer, in various stages and i talk, in most cases, i

find it's a lack of knowledge, or they just didn't want to have to deal with what was going on with them. they thought it would get better, and unfortunately, those things do not normally get better. they progress and get worse. >> tell me about your semicolon club. what is it the mission? >> its mission is to get the word out about colon cancer. that is beat able, treatable, and the things i just talked about from communicating, being aware, being an advocate, getting tested when it's the proper time. that's our mission. i want to touch people every day. it's not so much about research, or fund raising for a lot of money. >> i know you do have an event the fourth annual semicolon. >> we have a walk, and it's a fund-raiser, and i'm trying to get a crowd to get the word out, to pass along the information.
